Helping Families Hit by the Nepal Flash Floods

Burntwood Rotary and ShelterBox logos: Burntwood Rotary are proud to support ShelterBox

A major flash flood struck northern Nepal on 26 August, destroying homes, roads, bridges and vital infrastructure. The flood was triggered by a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, sending mud, ice and rock into the Bhote Koshi River.

Burntwood Rotary Club has supported ShelterBox for many years, helping them send aid to disaster areas around the world. In response to the floods we donated £590, which pays for one ShelterBox, giving a family who has lost their home emergency shelter and the essential items they need.

The scale of the disaster

  • As of 9 September, at least 1,375 people had been killed and more than 5,000 remained missing.
  • More than 85,000 people have been affected across the flood-hit districts.
  • Around 7,500 private buildings have been damaged, and more than 3,600 displaced people are living in temporary sites in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
  • Government-led search and rescue efforts have mobilised more than 20,800 personnel.
  • 45 suspension bridges and 35 road bridges have been destroyed, cutting off vital access routes and making it difficult to reach affected communities.
